Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin has signed into law a new bill that addresses problems with operating boats under the influence of alcohol and teen drinking.
The first law, which went into effect last month, lowers the legal limit for drunken driving of a boat to 0.08, in line with Oklahoma Motor Vehicle laws. The new law is to ward against boat accidents. Sen. Bill Brown of Eufaula wrote this bill. Sen. Brown’s family operates a marina on Lake Eufaula. He has stated that since 2003, over 103 drunken driving boating accidents have occurred in Oklahoma statewide. These accidents have resulted in 52 deaths.
The second law which goes into effect November 1, 2011, calls for stricter penalties for adults that allow teens and minors to drink at social events. The new law calls for penalties, punishable by fine as follows: 1st offense $500, 2nd offense $1,000, and subsequent offenses as much as $5,000. The law also provides that if a violation results in the wrongful death of another, that the fines could be between $2,500 and $5,000 with imprisonment up to 5 years.
